Free data room software: what each free option allows
None of these free options is a full data room for outside readers at no cost. Papermark's Free plan is $0 with page-by-page analytics, and the others stop at personal use, folder permissions or a billing start date. Papermark's pages disagree on whether Free holds data rooms, so treat a data room as a paid feature; see is Papermark free for the plan.
| Free option | What is free | Where it stops | Paid step after it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Papermark Free plan | $0, no credit card required; 50 links, 50 documents | No NDA, watermark or groups; more team members need a paid plan | Data Rooms: $179 billed monthly, 3 team members |
| Papermark open-source code | Code on GitHub, AGPLv3 outside the enterprise folders | Personal use, no data rooms; the help center asks teams for a license | License terms by request; hosting is yours |
| Google Drive shared folder | Viewer roles, 600 addresses per file, download settings | Folder permissions reach every file; no page-by-page view data per visitor | Papermark Free adds page-by-page analytics |
| Dropbox shared link | Dropbox Basic, 2 GB | Link passwords and expiry listed for paid plans, not Basic | A paid Dropbox plan, not priced here |
| Ansarada | No fees until you invite an external guest | Billing starts at go-live or 90 days after creation | 250 MB: $479 a month on a 1-month term |
| DocSend | 14-day trial of Advanced Data Rooms | No free plan card; unlimited visitors not available on trials | Advanced Data Rooms: $300 billed monthly, 3 users |
A room that outside readers open for months moves to a paid plan. The Papermark button on this page opens its pricing page, where the Free plan and the 7-day data room trial both show.

Try Papermark →Papermark's Free plan: page-by-page analytics for a few documents
The Free plan has 1 team member, 50 links, 50 documents and unlimited visitors, and needs no credit card. Papermark says page-by-page analytics show who opened a room and the time spent on each page.
Two limits matter: Free keeps analytics for 30 days and shows up to the last 20 views, and it has no NDA gate, dynamic watermark or groups. Adding team members needs a paid plan.
Open-source and self-hosted: free for whom
Papermark puts code outside its enterprise folders under AGPLv3, a copyleft license that makes a modified version run on a public server offer its source to users. Its help center says the open-source project is licensed for personal use, with no data rooms, and that team or company use needs a self-hosting license. Self-hosting terms differ between its pages. The code needs Node.js, PostgreSQL, blob storage on AWS S3 or Vercel Blob and an email service.
Servers, storage and upkeep are the cost of this route; Papermark open source covers the license files.
Google Drive and Dropbox folders as a free room
Google Drive offers Viewer roles, up to 600 email addresses per file, expiry dates on work and school accounts and settings that stop download, copy and print. Dropbox lists link passwords and expiry dates for paid plans and does not list Basic. Disabled downloads do not stop people saving the content by other means.
Google documents a view history for work and school accounts and Dropbox shows viewer info, but neither help page set describes page-by-page view data per visitor, an NDA before the first page or a group per buyer. Papermark says a shared drive can neither require an NDA first nor show which pages each buyer read. The using Google Drive as a data room guide has the steps.
Free until go-live, free trials and when to pay
Ansarada says there are no fees until you invite an external guest, and payment starts when the room goes live or 90 days after creation, whichever comes first. DocSend runs a 14-day trial of Advanced Data Rooms, and says unlimited visitors are not available on free trials. Datasite's page shows a free-trial button, and what it opens is not stated.
Past the Free plan's limits, Papermark's data room plans open with a 7-day free trial. Papermark's help center says NDA agreements and the request list are available during it.
